VANDI

With roots that go back into Mythren’s ancient days long before the Breaking, the vandi are the oldest surviving culture.

They are said to be the living descendents of the scattered survivors from Old Mythren’s Age of Dominion, an era marked with the rise and fall of powerful empires and the first glimpse into the scope of mortal ambition. That age ended in destruction, and those who survived adopted a gypsy lifestyle wandering from one place to another, sharing their stories in the form of song and refusing to lay down roots in any particular place. Tales, legends, and songs dating back to that long-lost era survive thanks solely to the vandi’s adherence to tradition and the endurance of their oral story-telling. Many vandi clans have long-standing family histories that date back centuries as well. Some are even believed to be directly linked to the sorcerer kings and seers of those long lost days.

For the vandi, transitioning into the broken world of Mythren was easier than it was for others. Theirs is a transitory lifestyle to begin with, and movement from one location to another came quite naturally. Already scattered over the twelve drifts of Mythren, the vandi became the last living touchstone to the world that was.

Though protective of their families and tradition, as well as a rare magic known only to their own kind, gypsy clans are quick to invite outsiders into their camps for trade or to share in a night's merriment and revelry. Unfortunately, the vandi are often mistrusted by other races likely due to the fact that unlike so many others, they have somehow retained their innate magic. There is a prophecy among their kind that a vandi child will be born with the natural skill to wield the arcane true source, as their ancestors once did in days of old, powerful enough to rival even the Wheelhouse. Whether it will be fulfilled or not remains to be seen, but already there are those who hunt the vandi with the intention of thwarting this prophecy before it can be fulfilled.
